The Ohio State University and Audubon Metals have entered into a licensing agreement aimed at advancing the commercialization of technology designed to increase the utilization of recycled aluminum alloys. Audubon Metals, which operates in Kentucky and Texas and is affiliated with Koch Enterprises, specializes in processing aluminum scrap for domestic and international die casters. The technology, developed by a research team led by Alan Luo at Ohio State, neutralizes iron contamination often found in typical aluminum scrap, enabling the resulting alloys to exhibit mechanical properties comparable to primary alloys used in die casting.

This innovation can reduce energy consumption and promote sustainability, making it a valuable addition to the U.S. automotive industry as it transitions to electric vehicles. Audubon Metals and Ohio State were supported in their research by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Reducing EMbodied-Energy And Decreasing Emissions (REMADE) Institute.
